Tummy Tuck After Weight Loss or Pregnancy?
Tuesday, May 29, 2012 at 6:51PM I am all in favor of a healthy, active lifestyle for weight loss and healthy living. I’m actually hearing many stories from obese individuals who have lost significant (100+) pounds and have kept it off! Inevitably, after gaining so much weight and losing it, skin which has been stretched will be left over with no body to cover and will hang. In addition, it is not just the skin which has been stretched to the max, the abdominal wall will also be expanded from intra abdominal fat and when the abdominal fat is lost, the wall will not necessarily spring back to its’ tight self and will droop. Yep, serious weight gain can have permanent ramifications on the body!
For me personally, I don’t think excess body skin would bother me, but you never know until you are in someone else’s shoes. I have a client who had triplets who was not only left with 3 fantastic children to raise after pregnancy, but excess skin which never returned to its’ original length as well as an abdominal wall with similar attributes. After many years of thought, my personal training client ended up getting a tummy tuck surgery, or abdominoplasty, to tighten the muscles in the abdominal muscles and get rid of excess skin. The deciding factor for her was that the excess skin was effecting more than what an outsider could observe. She dressed herself down to hide the skin, would not feel deserving of buying nice clothes, and had a lack of self esteem. So, she made sure she lost all the weight she could, got into very good shape, and had the abdominoplasty. She now feels much more comfortable in her own skin (pardon the pun).
To be clear, I am not in favor of using a Tummy Tuck procedure as a method of weight loss. But, I’m not sure if I were in the shoes of someone who already lost an enormous amount of weight, or a mother who’s skin and abdomen were stretched during pregnancy if a Tummy Tuck procedure wouldn’t be the way to go. I can say that I wouldn’t blame them if they made that decision. People can be self conscious and it can have a major impact on the whole of their life. One should make sure the do all they can to take the best care of themselves possible and if having a Tummy Tuck will make them happy, I say “Tuck away!”
Weight loss and pregnancy are just two examples of possible candidates for a Tummy Tuck, and I’m sure there are more. Either way, if you lost a bunch of weight or had a new bundle of joy, congratulations life is good and there is lots to celebrate! Maybe you need to reward yourself with getting a little work done?
What do you think? Leave a comment below and let me know if you are in favor of abdominoplasty or not and why. For the record, I’m indifferent and I think it is a personal decision.

I am not much into looking at, but somehow I got to go through many articles articles on your website. Its incredible how useful it is for me to check out you very often.
I have seen many women loss weight naturally by proper diet and exercise. I want to know such exercises because everyone cannot afford surgery.
I think that if it bothers a woman's self-esteem then she should definitely have it done after losing the weight. I however don't encourage women to have tummy tucks, etc done without having put in the hard work to lose the weight.
